The presentation gives the background of Wooldridge, Missouri and its historic decline. The fire burned half the town in ninety minutes. The presentation includes audio recordings of the participants and some of the illustrative videos that show the intensity of the fire. This was the largest fire that some of the most seasoned first responders in the state ever saw. They navigated these challenges of unprecedented situations never seen before in the Midwest. 

A native of Quincy, Illinois, Tim Scherrer received his B.A. and M.A. in History from Truman State University where he was also a Distinguished Military Graduate of the Army ROTC program. He also studied at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has worked at Truman State University and taught Military Science and Military History at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He also served as Director of College Placement/Counseling and Instructor of Military History at Missouri Military Academy. He is the Dean of Academics at Fr. Tolton Catholic High School in Columbia, MO. He served as Lieutenant Colonel 28 years in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Military Intelligence Officer. He received the Knowleton Award from the Military Intelligence Corps Association in 2015 and was inducted into the Army ROTC Hall of Fame at Truman State. He lives in Columbia, MO.

Mr. Hunsberger, born in Philadelphia, grew up in southern New Jersey. He has taught music at the Thailand Theological Seminary in Chiang Mai, at Webster College in Webster Groves MO, and at Washington University. Since age 13 he has been organist at Methodist, Episcopal, Congregational, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches. He practiced law in Berkeley for eight years before assuming an administrative staff position with the University of California.

Hunsberger studied carillon with James R. Lawson at the Riverside Church in New York City, and with Raymond Keldermans in Springfield IL. Since 1983 he has been an Assistant Carilloner at the Berk­eley campus. He has given carillon recitals widely in the US, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. For 35 years he has been the legal counsel to The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, and for 25 years was its treasurer. He holds the record for years served on its Board of Directors (22½) and as an officer (43), and for the consecutive number of congresses (annual meetings) attended (51).

Hunsberger is married to Neil, his companion of 35 years. Their house’s tiny plot in Oakland has seven coastal redwood trees on it. He manages nearly every year to drive cross-country in his convertible and does a lot of sudoku. He’s not much of a cook, but likes people who are.

Many hiring units also provide formal orientation and training sessions for their specific assistantship assignments. Such departmental training is a supplement to, rather than a substitute for, this required orientation. In addition, all graduate assistants (GAs/TAs/RAs) will be assigned required compliance trainings through the Office of Human Resources.

At the Ursa Experience, students are immersed in life at Missouri State University in a three-day, two-night adventure. Both first-year and transfer students admitted for Fall are invited to attend.

Students will:

• Discuss and think deeply about our public affairs mission
• Explore involvement opportunities at Missouri State
• Make memories that will last a lifetime

Several questions arise from this shifting focus towards interdisciplinary community collaboration. How can universities balance their academic independence with the practical needs and expectations of external partners? What distinguishes a truly reciprocal partnership from a transactional one? What governance structures or agreements are most effective in sustaining long-term partnerships? How can universities manage conflicts of interest that may arise when partnering with private industry or political entities? What role should students play in partnership initiatives, and how can their involvement be made meaningful rather than symbolic? How do resource disparities between institutions and community organizations affect partnership dynamics?

This this special pre-conference panel event as it will explore the evolving role of university partnerships in advancing research, policy innovation, community engagement, and workforce development. Guest panelists will examine how cross-sector collaborations can generate mutual value while also navigating challenges related to governance, equity, funding, and institutional mission and highlight practical strategies for building sustainable partnerships that extend beyond transactional relationships. 

What to expect: A guide will introduce conversation topics about culture, current events, holidays, and much more. Small groups will then talk about the topics for a few minutes before moving onto the next topic. Feeling shy, no worries, just listening is also welcome!
